The Eagle 1 November 2024
Principal's Report
Dear Members of the Marcellin College Community,
Last week saw us gathering together to celebrate the journey of our Year 12 students, marking the culmination of their time at Marcellin College with a Valedictory Mass at St Patrick's Cathedral. This special ceremony bookended the beginning and end of their journey with us, bringing everyone together in a moment of gratitude and reflection. Later, at Centrepiece at Melbourne Park, students, families and staff shared a meal, a little dancing and many cherished memories as we honoured this incredible group of young men.
The night was filled with joy and celebration and we were especially proud to present Anton Bulzomi with the Overall Excellence and Contribution Award, an honour that bears the legacy of J.J. Boyd. Anton’s commitment and dedication throughout his years at Marcellin epitomise the spirit of our College and we look forward to seeing the impact he and his peers will make in the world beyond our gates. Congratulations to the Class of 2024!
Most of the Class of 2024 are now immersed in their VCAA exams, applying themselves to this final academic challenge. We wish them every success and pray that their hard work and commitment are rewarded. May they approach each exam with courage, knowing that they are supported by the Marcellin College community every step of the way.
As the festive season draws near, we are delighted to present our upcoming junior musical, A Christmas Carol, in partnership with Our Lady of Mercy College (OLMC). This timeless story will be brought to life by our talented Year 7-9 students, showcasing their creativity, teamwork, and dedication. I encourage families to attend this wonderful production and enjoy the incredible efforts of our students and staff who have worked hard to showcase their talents. Booking details can be found below.
Meanwhile, our Year 9-11 students are preparing for their own exams as they approach the end of the academic year. It is a busy time, yet also a season of anticipation and reflection. As we prepare to wind down, may we remember the importance of our Marist HEART – Humility, Excellence, Acceptance, Resilience and Trust. These values will guide us toward growth and renewal.
Enjoy the upcoming long weekend – may it be a time of rest, joy, and connection with loved ones.
God bless,
Marco Di Cesare
Principal
God of the living and the dead,
by our Baptism, you made us your holy people and called us to share in the joy of your saints. By their help and example, you guide us to live for others as Jesus taught us. May their prayers strengthen and comfort us as we follow Jesus to his promise of everlasting life. Bless all those who have gone before us. Welcome them into Your light and love and bring them to the fullness of life with You.
We make this prayer to You through Jesus, Your Son.
Amen.
St Mary, our Good Mother…pray for us.
St Marcellin Champagnat…pray for us.
St Mary of the Cross MacKillop…pray for us.
And let us always remember to…pray for one another.

Feasts of All Saints and All Souls
At the beginning of November, we celebrate the twin Solemnities of All Saints and All Souls. In the Catholic tradition, saints are deemed to be people who have lived a holy and virtuous life, a life worthy of the example of Jesus Christ. In our Marist tradition, we look to the inspiration and virtue of Marcellin Champagnat. In his book, Saint of the Day, Leonard Foley OFM, says, "Saints' surrender to God's love was so generous an approach to the total surrender of Jesus that the Church recognises them as heroes and heroines worthy to be held up for our inspiration. They remind us that the Church is holy, can never stop being holy and is called to show the holiness of God by living the life of Christ." Today we recognise those women and men whose lives are to be held up for our inspiration and holiness.
Tomorrow we will celebrate the solemnity of the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, or All Souls. On All Souls Day, we pray for all people who have died. We ask God to bring them to the fullness of life in heaven to be with God and the saints forever. November is the month in which the Church traditionally prays for the dead. I encourage us all to take the time this month to pray for those who have died in the peace of Christ. Let us ask God to bless them with love and comfort those who still mourn.
Together, these feasts underscore our belief in the communion of saints, connecting the living and the dead in a spiritual solidarity that transcends physical life. They invite us all to embrace a shared legacy of faith and hope that binds all members of the Catholic community, past and present.
Breakfast Fundraiser
Last Friday and over the next month, the Game Changers have been cooking up bacon and egg rolls for hungry mouths coming to school. The event is a fundraiser for the Exodus Community and St Mary’s House of Welcome, 2 of the charities that Marcellin College supports. The next breakfast fundraisers will be on Friday, 8 November and Friday, 22 November. The rolls are $5 each.

Year 9 and 10 Gamechanger students have started collecting for our annual donation drive for St Mary's House of Welcome, a charity that provides support and services to those who are experiencing homelessness or disadvantage. We are collecting non-perishable food items that will go towards Christmas hampers for those clients of St Mary's House of Welcome, to hopefully bring some cheer this festive season. Donations will be collected in Pastorals or can be placed in the box at Marist House Main Reception.
We thank all families, staff and students for their generosity.

Library Report
On Thursday, 24 October, a number of Year 7 and 8 students were invited to a special lunchtime Library session with author James Phelan. James has written over 30 books for children and adults and kept us all entertained with his stories of how his writing career began and where he gets his inspiration from.
The students who attended asked inciteful questions and commented afterwards that they enjoyed the presentation, and that James was “funny” and “really interesting.” It was wonderful to see some of James’ books get borrowed straight after the talk finished.
Placidus the Penguin also got into the spirit of Create24, the College's art, design and technology showcase– he was especially excited to hear about the 2025 NASA trip!

Excursion to Mediterraneo Supermarket
The Year 8 Italian classes visited Mediterranean Wholesalers along Sydney Road. Upon arrival, we participated in a treasure hunt where we scavenged and looked for many different Italian delicacies. These included vegetables preserved in vinegar, salami, pasta sauces and my personal favourite, the freshly made pasta. As we walked around, we saw many different and authentic Italian foods that you wouldn’t find in normal supermarkets. While we were there, we had the chance to try Italian desserts such as crunchy crostoli and creamy cannoli. I loved seeing the many different people entering and purchasing these amazing foods. Towards the end of the excursion, we were allowed to shop. I bought a jar of sun-dried tomatoes, fresh pasta, soft and crunchy ciabatta bread and small bottles of apricot nectar. When we arrived back at school, we had the chance to “mangiare” and “bere” our purchases. Overall, I think I speak for all who attended that this was a great and enjoyable experience and I look forward to revisiting this amazing supermarket with my family.

This week, during the a special four-week Christmas cooking program, students decorated fruitcakes provided by the Lions Club. They used almond icing and various Christmas-themed decorations, showcasing some very creative icing techniques. Everyone had a lot of fun during the activity.
Special thanks to Hilary and Ekko at the Manningham Uniting Church, where the cooking class is held.

Staff Profile
Hello, my name is Georgia Girolami. I have been a member of the Marcellin College community for just on one year. My role is within the English learning area, teaching English across Years 10 and 12. What I enjoy most about the College is working with such lovely people who make the workplace an enjoyable environment to be part of.
When I’m not at the College, I tend to be playing sport. This year my football team and I moved up into Division 1 after securing the Division 2 flag last year. This year brought its challenges, but the girls and I were able to go back to back and win the Division 1 Grand Final against Diamond Creek. We are the first women’s team within the NFNL to win a Division 2 and Division 1 flag back-to-back.
Student Profile
My name is Dylan, and I’m in Year 8. What I love most about Marcellin College is the endless opportunities that can help shape you into who you want to be. I enjoy playing in the junior concert band, attending the M2 Theatre Company (this year's junior production is Charles Dicken's A Christmas Carol) and singing in the choir. In the future, I hope to become a professional musician or even a scientist.
When I am not studying, I love to hang out with my friends through the extra-curriculum activities and enjoy many sports such as tennis, swimming, and soccer. I cannot wait to continue my journey at Marcellin College and strive for the highest!

Careers News
Year 9
Families and students of current Year 9 students are requested to check the correspondence sent out earlier this week on Compass regarding students participating in their Morrisby profile next week.
The Career Profile can help your child identify their true career direction by assessing their abilities, personality, interests, and motivations. This understanding allows them to make informed choices about their options at ages 16 and 18, such as higher education courses and apprenticeships. Additionally, the profile provides valuable information about careers that may suit them best.
More information can be found via the following link. Students will need to bring their fully charged laptop and charger.
If you have any queries, don't hesitate to get in touch with any of the team from the Marcellin College Careers department, Kevin Kelly: kevin.kelly@marcellin.vic.edu.au & Lara Ingram: lara.ingram@marcellin.vic.edu.au
Work experience 2025
Next week, we will provide current Year 9 students with information about work experience opportunities for 2025. Please note that participation is optional. Students will have the chance to opt into a variety of industries where we have established partnerships.
Additionally, we invite any families with business or industry connections who are interested in forming an ongoing partnership with the College to host work-experience students to reach out to us. We would love to hear from you!

Sport Report
Volleyball Captain 2025
Hung of Mannes House has become a dedicated and passionate leader in the Marcellin College volleyball program. An alumnus of St Bede’s in Balwyn North, Hung began his volleyball journey at the College in Year 8, quickly developing a love for the sport. His skills and dedication led him to join the 1st team in Year 9, and he officially debuted later that year in a memorable game against Mentone at the close of the AGSV season. Hung’s talent shone brightly in 2023 when he helped Marcellin College secure a silver medal in the Victorian Volleyball Schools Cup (VVSC) Division 1, having gone undefeated throughout the AGSV regular season.
Hung balances his athletic commitments with a full schedule of academic responsibilities and a part-time job. His volleyball season demands rigorous training—he practices four times a week, with two sessions for Heidelberg Volleyball Club on Monday and Thursday nights and two sessions at school on Monday mornings and Thursday afternoons. This intensive routine requires careful planning and time management, especially as he juggles VCE subjects like Chemistry, Religion, General Math, English, Visual Communication Design and Accounting. Hung maximizes class time to complete his assignments, helping him avoid late nights and maintain focus across all his commitments.
Hung’s involvement with Heidelberg Volleyball Club’s Division 1 Men’s team and the National Development Program each December has added valuable experience to his athletic career. Competing at this level challenges him to continuously improve his skills while providing him with unique growth opportunities. His journey with Heidelberg has not only strengthened his gameplay but also enriched his leadership abilities, which he brings back to Marcellin College.
As Captain, Hung eagerly anticipates inspiring younger players and fostering a team environment filled with camaraderie and dedication. He aims to instil in them a passion for volleyball and encourages them to engage in club or academy programs outside of school to enhance their skills. His primary advice for junior players is to listen attentively to their coaches’ feedback and to embrace the experience of competing in external programs, which can greatly enhance their game.
Looking ahead, Hung envisions a successful and enjoyable AGSV season where all teams, especially those new to volleyball, can have fun while competing. His goal is to create a positive environment for all players, ensuring they feel motivated and supported. Through his leadership, Hung aims to make the season memorable, bringing out the best in his teammates and promoting a culture of encouragement and enthusiasm for the sport.
Hung Nguyen’s journey reflects Marcellin’s values of perseverance, commitment, and community. His dedication to balancing academics, sport, and leadership roles sets a powerful example, highlighting the spirit of Marcellin College’s student-athletes.
We wish Hung well for the season ahead.
Squash Captain 2025
Angus, a Year 11 student from Kenny House, has made a remarkable impact at Marcellin College through his dedication to both academics and Beyond the Classroom programs. A former student of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Deepdene, Angus began his sporting journey at Marcellin in Year 7, focusing on squash and soccer. Since then, he has shown both skill and commitment, particularly excelling in squash, where he debuted for the 1st team in 2023. Angus's proudest moment to date is his role in securing the Division 4 championship with his squash team. He aims to continue this success, hoping to bring in new players and encourage them to embrace the sport.
Balancing sports, academics, and extracurriculars, Angus manages a busy schedule. With squash training once a week and games on Saturday mornings, he maintains productivity in and out of the classroom. His involvement extends beyond athletics; he actively participates in Marcellin College’s social justice initiatives, volunteering with the Game Changers program, which allows him to serve the community and develop leadership skills.
A talented musician, Angus also represents Marcellin College at the Victorian Schools Music Festival (VSMF) and performs in both Senior and Intermediate Concert Bands. He has participated in the prestigious Generations in Jazz festival in Mount Gambier, where he plays in the Big Band and Small Jazz Ensemble, demonstrating his versatility and commitment to the arts.
As Captain of the squash team, Angus is eager to mentor younger players, helping them grow and succeed in the sport. He encourages junior players to approach sports with enthusiasm and an open mind, valuing the connections and mental health benefits that sports bring. Angus is excited to lead his team towards another successful season and aims to foster a welcoming environment where new players can enjoy the benefits of physical activity.
With a vision for a strong, unified team, Angus exemplifies the Marcellin College spirit, showing that with dedication, students can excel across academics, sports, and community initiatives.
We wish Angus well for the season ahead.
