The Eagle 7 March 2025
Principal's Report

Dear Members of the Marcellin College Community,
The past fortnight has been full of activity, connection and learning at the College. It is always a pleasure to engage with our students, parents and staff in the many events that bring our community together. Along with our Year 10 Meet the Principal Morning Tea, here are some highlights from the last two weeks.
Cambodia Immersion Experience Information Night
I had the privilege of attending our Cambodia Immersion Experience information night. Having participated in the 2024 immersion, along with then Year 11 student Luke and Augustine House Leader Ms Sarah Carmody, I was able to share my experiences and learnings with our families. This immersion is a profound experience for our senior students, offering opportunities for cultural understanding, service and personal growth. We look forward to organising this event for 2025 and I encourage any parents of senior students who are interested in their sons attending to contact Mrs Geralyn McCarthy for more information.
Final AGSV Round for the Summer Season
This Saturday marked the final AGSV round for the Summer season. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all our coaches, staff and students who committed themselves to their teams and represented the College with pride. The dedication and sportsmanship displayed throughout the season have been commendable. Our 1sts Cricket team move into the finals and we await their achievements in a fortnight.
Year 7 Parent Social BBQ
We had the pleasure of hosting our Year 7 Parent Social BBQ, an event designed to help families connect and build relationships as their sons begin their journey at Marcellin College. It was a great night, with plenty of lively conversations and community spirit. The Leadership Team enjoyed managing the BBQ and catching up with parents—it was wonderful to see so many new families forming friendships and feeling part of our community.

Year 7 Orientation Camp
This week, I visited our Year 7 Orientation Camp, where our newest students were actively engaging in a variety of exciting activities. As I watched them navigate the Flying Fox, Rock Climbing, Archery and other team-building exercises, I was in awe of some staff who were up there with their harnesses or getting involved in the canoeing. These experiences are invaluable in helping our Year 7 students develop friendships, build confidence and familiarise themselves with the values and culture of our College.

Year 12 Parent and Student Breakfasts
Our Year 12 Parent and Student Breakfasts were once again a great success. Due to the popularity of this event, we hosted it across two mornings this year to ensure that all interested families could attend. A highlight was hearing from our panels and I extend my gratitude to the Class of 2024 students and parents who shared their insights on how to navigate the challenges and opportunities of Year 12.
Ash Wednesday
As a Catholic community, Ash Wednesday marks an important time of reflection and renewal. This year, we observed the day in our Pastoral Groups, taking time to reflect on our journey and the call to kindness, humility, and personal growth. The ashes we receive on this day are a powerful symbol - reminding us of our shared humanity and the continuous call to renewal and compassion.
Swimming Carnival
As this newsletter is finalised, we eagerly anticipate our upcoming Swimming Carnival. These carnivals are a highlight of our sporting calendar - full of energy, House spirit and friendly competition. I am particularly hopeful that my House, Redden, will make a strong showing this year – hopefully improving on last year’s performance! Regardless of results, it promises to be a day of community, fun and celebration of our students' enthusiasm and effort.
This is just a snapshot of the last fortnight at our College—a place that is constantly alive with activity, learning and connection. Thank you for your ongoing support in making Marcellin College a vibrant and thriving community.
God bless,
Marco Di Cesare
Principal

God of the Journey,
As we begin this Lenten season, we embrace the challenge of surrendering all that does not come from You.
Help us to remove the clutter and distractions, focusing on the simple truth of Your love.
May we see your goodness and your glory in new ways throughout this season of Lent. May we know the depths of your love for us more fully.
May we find resurrection life springing up from this old dusty ground, and may we be surprised by joy in all of it.
In you, we find our truest joy, Jesus.
Amen.
Faith & Mission

Ash Wednesday
As we enter the season of Lent, Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of a time of reflection, renewal and transformation. The ashes we receive on our foreheads are a powerful reminder of our human frailty, but they also symbolise the opportunity for a fresh start—a call to turn our hearts back to God.
Lent invites us into a 40-day journey of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, mirroring Jesus’ time in the desert. It is a season to slow down, to reassess our priorities and to deepen our relationship with God and one another. Pope Francis encourages us to see Lent not just as a period of personal sacrifice but as a time of encounter, solidarity and hope.
This year, as we reflect on the Jubilee theme of “Pilgrims of Hope”, we are reminded that Lent is a pilgrimage—one that calls us to look beyond ourselves and reach out in love and compassion. Whether it is through acts of kindness, giving to those in need, or simply making more time for prayer, each step we take brings us closer to the heart of God.
As a Marist community, let us embrace this sacred season with humility, generosity and hope, knowing that through our Lenten journey, we are preparing to celebrate the joy and renewal of Easter.
May this Lent be a time of grace and transformation for us all.

Project Compassion – Making a Difference Together
Throughout Term 1, our Game Changers students, supported by the Faith and Mission team, will be leading a series of fundraising events to support the vital work of Caritas Australia. This is a meaningful way for our community to stand in solidarity with the most vulnerable and put our faith into action.
We kicked off our efforts on Shrove Tuesday, selling pancakes to students and staff for a gold coin donation. Thank you to everyone who supported this initiative!
As the term unfolds, we will be launching further fundraising events, and we hope you can join us in making a difference. Parents who are willing and able to donate items—such as bread, sausages or eggs—for an upcoming sausage sizzle or breakfast roll fundraiser would be greatly appreciated.
If you can assist, please email me at geralyn.mccarthy@marcellin.vic.edu.au or call 9851 1589. Further details on how you can support will be shared in upcoming editions of The Eagle.
Thank you for your generosity and support!

Year 7 Reflection Day – A Time to Pause and Grow
Reflection Days are an integral part of the Faith and Mission life at Marcellin College, offering students the opportunity to step away from their daily routines and reflect on their faith journey.
Last week, our Year 7 students participated in their first Reflection Day, marking an important moment in their transition into the Marcellin College community. The day provided time to explore the College’s Marist faith life, deepen their understanding of the Marist charism and consider how they might engage in the many opportunities available to them.
Guest speaker Daniel Perera shared his personal Marist journey, inspiring students to see how the Marist spirit continues to shape lives today. Students then engaged in a series of interactive workshops, delving into the life and mission of St Marcellin Champagnat and the Marist story.
Each day concluded with a Eucharistic celebration, presided over by Fr Luke Bulley CP from the Donvale Passionist community, reminding us all of the centrality of faith in our College life.
This Reflection Day was a valuable experience for our newest students, helping them to feel more connected, inspired and ready to embrace the Marist way.

Parents, Your Voice Matters! Marist Charism Scale
Parents of Marcellin College are invited to participate in the Marist Charism Scale Survey, a key part of our Continuous School Improvement Plan. This survey helps us assess how well we are living out our Catholic Marist identity and guides our future growth.
Developed through research from the University of Leuven, the survey provides us with valuable insights into our strengths and areas for development.
We encourage as many parents as possible to take part—the survey takes just 25 minutes to complete. As a thank you, participants who submit a certificate of completion will be entered into a draw to win one of three vouchers ($250, $150, or $50)!
To participate, please complete this form and we will send you the survey link and instructions. Thank you for your support and please reach out if you have any questions.

St Marcellin Champagnat Award
Are you an Old Collegian, aged 18 to 25, with a passion for faith and service?
The St Marcellin Champagnat Award is your chance to deepen your connection with the Marist community and put your faith into action. The award was reintroduced in 2024 & offers an Old Collegian the chance to participate in Marcellin College's Immersion trip to Cambodia.

The Importance of Homework and Home Study
Homework plays a vital role in reinforcing learning and helping students consolidate their understanding of concepts covered in class. However, it is important to distinguish between homework and home study.
This year, we will be spending some time to focus on homework and home study. Our Year 7 teachers in particular, are working closely with their students to help establish these important routines.
Homework consists of specific tasks set by teachers, such as completing exercises, working on assignments, or preparing for assessments. Home study, on the other hand, is self-directed learning, where students take the initiative to review classwork, summarise notes and revise key concepts.
I’m sure parents often hear from their sons that they “don’t have any homework.” While this may be true, some of the time, there is always home study that can be done. Home study is an essential skill for senior students, as exam preparation is usually more home study than homework.
As students’ progress through secondary school, the amount of time required for homework and study increases. To support academic success, we recommend the following approximate nightly expectations:
Year Level | Hours Per Day (inc weekends) | Hours Per Week (inc weekends) |
7 & 8 | 1 - 1.5 hours | 7 - 9 hours |
9 & 10 | 1.5 - 2 hours | 10 - 12 hours |
11 & 12 | Up to 3 hours | 20 - 24 hours |
If your son is saying that he has no homework, you might like to try the following home study suggestions:
- Reviewing the day’s lesson and practicing any new terms
- Reviewing the day’s lesson and creating a summary of new concepts (in a summary book or on paper) is something that can be very handy for future tests or exams
- Creating a mind or concept map to reinforce connections between concepts (Year 7 students recently had a workshop with the visiting ‘Elevate’ team on creating mind maps)
- Completing a few extra practice problems or questions
- Reading ahead in the textbook, to get a head start on new concepts
- Reading from an English novel
- Watching a video on a current or upcoming concept – YouTube does have a number of good educational video’s but students do have access to videos through most of their class text resources.
Developing strong study habits early ensures students build the resilience and discipline needed for their senior years. We encourage families to support their sons by helping establish a quiet and structured study environment at home.
Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences
A reminder that Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences for all year levels are coming up. These conferences provide an opportunity to discuss your son's progress, celebrate achievements and set goals for the term ahead.
Bookings will open on Friday, 7 March.
Parents and carers should keep an eye on Compass for further details.
Congratulations to Year 7 on a Fantastic Camp!
Earlier this week, I was lucky enough to join our Year 7 students on their Orientation Camp. It was wonderful to see students so enthusiastic and willing to step outside their comfort zones.
Over three action-packed days, students took on some daunting challenges such as wall climbing, the flying fox, a leap of faith and a giant swing.
A heartfelt thank you to all the staff who dedicated their time and energy to making this camp a memorable experience for our newest students. And a big congratulations to the Year 7 students!

International Women's Day - Sunday, 8 March
Marcellin College continues to recognise the importance of gender equality by acknowledging the achievements of women made throughout history, and promotes the pursuit of a safe and equal future for women in Australia and around the world. This important celebration also serves as an opportunity for us to show gratitude for the many remarkable women within the Marcellin family.
Swimming Carnival Day - Friday, 7 March
On Friday, 7 March, the junior year levels participated in three crucial workshops designed to support and promote positive wellbeing practices.
For the first time at Marcellin, leading educational program provider Elephant Ed worked with our Year 9 students and led them in important discussions around consent, respectful relationships and respecting boundaries. The students engaged maturely in these sessions and were encouraged to make informed, positive and safe decisions as they navigate relationships and growing up.
The Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation also presented at the College for the first time to our Year 7 and 8 students and explored influences on gambling attitudes and behaviour. The students investigated gambling in its many forms and analysed the strategies used in modern gambling marketing. The lessons were highly valuable in promoting informed decision-making and minimising harm.
These sessions alternated with a workshop with Transition Coordinator and Director of Learning for Years 7 & 8, Ryan Edwards, who facilitated a workshop in partnership with the eSafety Commissioner and Elevate Education. The materials provided in this session enabled our students to consolidate their knowledge of study strategies, organising a homework schedule and useful tips to maximise memory retention. In addition, Ryan supported the students in recognising safe online practices and ways to remain safe when using social media and interacting online.
The College will continue to prioritise the wellbeing and learning of our students so that they may strive for the highest and remain educated on the challenges that life presents within contemporary society.

From our Learning Areas
Car Workshop - A Journey of Growth and Learning
In 2025, Marcellin College’s Applied Learning program proudly celebrates its 7th Car Workshop activity. This initiative, which began in 2018, was the brainchild of Tony Likousis, who envisioned a maintenance workshop for senior VCAL students. The inaugural workshop was met with enthusiastic feedback from both students and parents, with comments like, “When will I ever get an opportunity to work under a car?” and “No one has ever taught me how to change a flat tyre!”
Over the years, the Car Workshop has received unwavering support from the VCE Vocational Major (VM) leadership. This backing has allowed the project to evolve into a full-service and maintenance car workshop, specifically designed for VM senior students. The photos from these workshops vividly capture the hands-on learning and the sense of accomplishment among the students.
The vision for the Car Workshop is to expand even further. From its humble beginnings, the goal is to establish a dedicated facility equipped with a car hoist and advanced tools. This would enable a more comprehensive educational experience, allowing students from the younger year levels to participate and benefit from hands-on car maintenance sessions.
Student feedback:
- “I can’t believe we get under the car and do a proper service!”
- “It’s the first time someone gave us an opportunity to do a wheel change with proper tools.”
- “The only problem is that it only goes for 30 minutes!”
Fran Davey, Applied Learning & VET Leader

NGV Teen’s Art Party
On Saturday, 1 March, two of our lucky students won free tickets to the NGV Teen’s Art Party which featured entry to the Yayoi Kusama exhibition and a variety of Art activities. Students were asked to design a carry bag to promote the Kusama exhibition. Please join me in congratulating both Rob F in Year 9 and Charles G in Year 12 for winning the competition with their fun and creative designs!

Excitement Builds for Our New Library Opening!
As the grand opening of our brand-new library approaches, the anticipation within the Marcellin community is truly palpable. Students and staff alike are eager to explore this exciting new space, which promises to be a hub for learning, creativity, and collaboration.
Wide Reading Program in Full Swing
Our Wide Reading program for Years 7 and 8 is already well underway. With the dedicated support of our fantastic English teachers and Ms Preedy, our Teacher Librarian, students have been engaging in individual reading conferences. These sessions allow us to tailor reading programs to each student’s needs, helping them develop essential comprehension and analytical skills.
To further foster a love of reading, we encourage parents and caregivers to support their children by setting aside dedicated reading time at home. Ideally, students should read for at least 15–30 minutes, four times a week.

Celebrating Library Lovers’ Day
On 14 February, we embraced Library Lovers’ Day, a wonderful opportunity for students to express what makes our library special to them. Here are just a few of their heartfelt responses:
- “I love the library because of the people I’ve met and the connections I’ve made.”
- “The space is open most of the day, the air-conditioning is great and I can do my homework.”
- “I love how many different books and genres are available here.”
- “I love playing games with my friends.”
- “I enjoy socialising, and I also love reading books.”
- “There are so many books to choose from at Marcellin!”
The library continues to be a place where students can read, learn and connect. We can’t wait to see everyone enjoying the new space very soon!

Student Profile
Hi, my name is James and I am a Year 8 student here at Marcellin College. My goal for Year 8 is to take a step further with my studies and classes.
What I love most about Marcellin College is the community, facilities and the sporting program, which I have been a part of since last year. I have enjoyed playing soccer and will definitely be doing it again this year. I was also part of the junior production last year and thoroughly enjoyed it.
In the future, I hope to become a photographer because I love designing and art, and want to capture things in the moment.
I enjoyed my year in 2024, as I had many new opportunities such as two new languages, getting to learn a new instrument and having the opportunity to be the SRC of my House Lavalla. This year, I have chosen Italian as my language and tried out the guitar as my instrument in music. I hope to excel in these areas and step out of my comfort zone.

Sport Report

Congratulations to Zac who has been named Swim Captain for 2025. A proud member of Mannes House, Zac's journey from Serpell Primary School to becoming a senior leader at Marcellin College is a testament to his hard work.
A Versatile Athlete
Zac's sporting journey at Marcellin began in Year 7 and has been marked by his participation in multiple sports. He has been a consistent presence in the swimming squad from Year 7 through to Year 12, showcasing his prowess in the pool. His talents extend beyond swimming, as he has also played football from Year 7 to Year 12, basketball until Year 10 and water polo from Year 10 to Year 12.
Achievements and Accolades
Zac's list of achievements is impressive. He has represented Marcellin in every AGSV swimming night, with a standout performance in Year 11 where he placed 3rd in the 50m butterfly, earning colours in swimming. His dedication to the sport is evident as he has been the swim carnival year level champion for four consecutive years (2020, 2021, 2022 and 2024). In 2025, Zac's leadership qualities were recognised as he was appointed Mannes House Captain.
Balancing Act: Training and Academics
Balancing rigorous training with academic commitments is no easy feat, especially in Year 12. Zac's weekly schedule is a testament to his discipline:
- Monday: Football
- Tuesday: Swimming
- Wednesday: Football
- Thursday: Swimming
- Friday: Swimming
Despite the demanding schedule, Zac ensures he dedicates at least two hours daily to both his studies and physical training. His commitment to academics is unwavering, always prioritising schoolwork while maintaining his athletic pursuits.
Leadership and Vision
As the Swim Captain, Zac is eager to lead by example, encouraging and supporting his teammates. His advice to junior players is simple yet profound: "Continue to learn, grow, and get better at your chosen sport, and aim to lead the group."
Community Involvement
Zac's passion for swimming extends beyond school. He has competed for CA Tritons and Camberwell Grammar Aquatic, reaching state championships and even competing interstate in South Australia, where he reached state championship finals.
Looking Ahead
With the AGSV night on 27 March, fast approaching, Zac's vision for the year is clear: continue to train hard, excel in swimming events, and lead his team to success.
Zac exemplifies the spirit of Marcellin College, balancing academic excellence with sporting prowess. His journey is a testament to what can be achieved with dedication, discipline, and a passion for excellence.
We wish him well.
