    Principal's Report

Dear Members of the Marcellin College Community,

This weekend marks a significant moment in the life of our global Church with the inauguration of our newly elected Pope Leo XIV. His acceptance of the call to lead the Church is a powerful reminder of our shared mission to walk together in faith, humility, simplicity and modesty – the last three the basic spiritual attitudes of what it means to be a Marist. May his papacy be filled with wisdom, courage, and compassion and may it inspire us all - especially our young people - to live with purpose and a Marist HEART.

    Why Catholic Education Matters
In this newsletter, I share a video titled The Value of Catholic Education in Victoria (watch here), which highlights some of the lifelong benefits experienced by those who attend Catholic schools.

Research shows that Catholic school graduates are more likely to be employed, earn higher wages, enjoy better health and life satisfaction and are strongly inclined to contribute to society - whether by working in public service sectors or giving generously to charity. These outcomes are not accidental; they stem from an education that focuses not only on academic achievement but also on nurturing the whole person - spiritually, morally and socially. We are proud to be part of this legacy at Marcellin College.

    10% Braver: Year Level Assemblies
Over recent weeks, I have had the privilege of speaking at our student-led assemblies across all year levels, sharing the message of being 10% braver. Whether it’s stepping forward in learning, taking initiative in friendships, or contributing more openly to College life, our call to courage - rooted in our Marist HEART value of Excellence - asks each of us to stretch just a little beyond our comfort zones. The students have responded and I look forward to further discussions with our students around being 10% braver.

    Celebrating our Musicians
Our College’s music program continues to grow in confidence and excellence. The Champagnat Choir, in particular, has become a vital part of our College’s daily life, lifting the spirit of our masses, liturgies and assemblies through their passionate and prayerful performances. This week, they represented us proudly at the Deputy Principal’s Women in Leadership Dinner, offering a beautiful and moving performance that sung to the heart. We thank all our music staff and students who enrich the life of our community in such joyful and meaningful ways.

    Trivia, Laughter and Future Eagles
This week, we welcomed our 2026 Year 7 families to our Grade 6 Trivia Night. It was a fantastic opportunity to build community and celebrate the beginning of their Marcellin journey. While the competitiveness was fierce (and some parents may have taken their trivia knowledge a bit too seriously!), the laughter and camaraderie reminded us of the vibrant and welcoming spirit of our College. It’s safe to say - we don’t just form young minds here; we also know how to have a bit of fun!

    Mother's Day Breakfasts
Last week, our College hosted two special breakfasts in honour of Mother's Day. These mornings are always among the most well-attended events of the year - and for good reason. The warmth in the room, the food and most memorably, the heartfelt video messages from our boys to their mums and motherly figures created moments of genuine gratitude. We give thanks for these incredible women whose love, strength and sacrifices shape the lives of our young men every day. Read more in the Community Engagement section.

Weekend Access Reminder: North-East Link Works
As we head into the weekend, please note that Bulleen Road will be closed from 8pm Friday, 16 May and reopen at 5am on Monday, 19 May due to works for the North-East Link Project. Parents are asked to use Sandra Street to access the College for any Beyond the Classroom sports or other weekend activities. Please follow the directions of NELP traffic controllers to ensure a safe and smooth arrival.

Wishing you all a safe and joyful weekend.

    God bless,

    Marco Di Cesare
    Principal

    Loving God,
We give thanks for the guidance of your Spirit in the life of the Church, and for the election of Pope Leo XIV. Bless him with wisdom, compassion, and courage as he leads your people in faith and hope.

In this month of May, we turn to Mary, our Good Mother and model of discipleship. May her example guide our Marist community as we seek to follow Christ with hearts open to love, service, and justice.

Open our eyes to see those in need—especially the poor, the elderly, and those without a home. Inspire us to act with kindness and courage, especially through the efforts of our Game Changers and all students who seek to make a difference.

May their witness stir in all of us a deeper sense of compassion and solidarity with the vulnerable.

Help us, Lord, to be your hands and feet in the world—serving humbly, loving boldly, and always walking in the way of Mary with a Marist HEART.

    Amen.

    Faith & Mission

A New Shepherd for the Church
The election of Pope Leo XIV marks a significant moment for the Catholic Church and the world. As Catholics in a Marist school, this is a time to renew our attentiveness to the voice of the Spirit calling the Church into a new era. Pope Leo XIV’s papacy invites us to reflect on the role of leadership, humility, and service—qualities that are not only central to his new ministry but also deeply embedded in our Marist tradition.

For us at Marcellin College, Pope Leo XIV’s election serves as a reminder that faith is never static. It moves, breathes, and calls us into deeper communion with God and one another. It encourages us to live out the Gospel with compassion and courage, especially among those on the margins. As Marists, we are called to educate “in the way of Mary,” and this new moment in the life of the Church challenges us to look again at how we are forming young people for a faith that is active, engaged, and outward-looking.

Reviewing Our Christian Service: A Core of Faith and Mission
In light of our Continuous School Improvement Plan (CSIP), we are currently reviewing the opportunities students have to participate in Christian Service and faith-in-action programs. As a Catholic Marist school, Christian Service is not an optional extra—it is central to who we are.

Service forms hearts – and is at the basis of our Marist HEART. It allows students to encounter Christ in the face of the other, especially in the poor, the lonely, and the vulnerable. By reviewing our current practices and exploring new pathways for service, we hope to better support our young people to grow in empathy, justice, and solidarity. Our goal is to ensure that Christian Service opportunities are meaningful, accessible across year levels, and clearly connected to our faith identity and Gospel values.

Game Changers: Forming Young Leaders for Mission
Game Changers is a vibrant, student-led formation program for young people across the College who wish to explore their faith, develop leadership skills, and live out the Marist call to serve. Meeting regularly in small groups, students reflect on their faith, engage with social justice issues, and plan practical ways to make a difference in their communities.

One powerful example of this is the project currently being undertaken by our Year 9 Game Changers: the Comfort Cross Project.

Comfort Crosses: Small Symbols, Deep Meaning
The Comfort Cross is a small, hand-held wooden cross designed to be held in times of prayer, anxiety, or illness. It is curved to fit gently into the palm of a hand—a tactile reminder of Christ’s closeness and comfort.

Our Year 9 Game Changers will be crafting these Comfort Crosses by hand as part of their commitment to Christian Service. Once completed, the crosses will be blessed and gifted to elderly parishioners in our local communities, many of whom live alone or in aged care facilities. In doing so, our students are not just learning carpentry skills; they are learning compassion, presence, and the powerful simplicity of being Christ to others.

Standing in Solidarity: The Vinnies Winter Sleepout
Our Game Changers are also preparing to take part in the annual Vinnies Winter Sleepout on the evening of Thursday, 5 June, where they will spend the night sleeping rough at the College to raise money and awareness for the plight of those experiencing homelessness. This initiative is more than a fundraiser—it’s a powerful act of solidarity with the vulnerable in our community.

We invite all students across the College to get involved—either by participating on the night or by actively raising funds to support this vital cause. Sponsorships can be made through the official Vinnies platform which we will advertise to our Marcellin College community in the coming weeks,  and every dollar raised goes directly towards providing shelter, food, and support for people in need.

Together, let us be a Marist community that continues to look beyond ourselves and live out the Gospel call to love and serve.

    Winners: Marist Charism Survey Scale
Thank you to all the parents who participated in the Marist Charism Survey Scale. As advertised last term, all participants were entered into the draw to win one of three gift vouchers.

We are pleased to announce the winners:

    1. Clare Goodison – $250 gift voucher
    2. Natalie Bell – $150 gift voucher
    3. Anna O'Toole – $50 gift voucher

Congratulations to our winners, and thank you once again to all who contributed to this important survey.

Looking Ahead: Exam Readiness and Future Pathways
As I mentioned in my last newsletter article, a number of significant academic events are approaching that mark key moments in the year for students and families.

Our Semester 1 examination period will take place from Tuesday, 10 June to Monday, 16 June. All Year 10 students and those studying Unit 1 subjects (Year 11) will complete exams during this time. The exam timetable and arrangements have been shared via Compass, and students are encouraged to begin revising and preparing early.

The exam is a very specific form of assessment, and developing the skills and confidence to succeed takes practice.

    Tips For Examination Preparation

Our Homework Club, held 3:30–5:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, provides excellent support for any students looking for additional study support. Our tutors Mr Thomas Blasioli, Mr Max Barro and Mr Julian Baldacchino offer tutoring across subjects including Mathematics, Science and English.

All students from any year level are welcome to attend and make the most of these opportunities.
The Homework Club is now running in our newly refurbished Library space.

GAT and Pathways Planning – Tuesday, 17 June
A key date for calendars is Tuesday, 17 June, which is GAT Day. All students completing a Unit 3 snd 4 sequence, including Year 11 students and those enrolled in Unscored or Vocational Major pathways, are required to sit the General Achievement Test (GAT).

The GAT provides essential data for moderation and assessment processes, and is used by the Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority (VCAA) in finalising grades and scores. Students should take this opportunity seriously and prepare accordingly.

The same day, also marks the beginning of subject selection and pathway planning for our Year 9 and 10 students. These students will begin initial discussions with their Pastoral Leaders about their interests, strengths, and future aspirations.

More information on both of these will be shared with families soon.

To further support the subject selection process, we do have some information evenings coming up, particularly designed to inform about Vocational Education (VET), the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and the VCE VM (Vocational Major).

Looking ahead, we also encourage families to save the date for our Subject & Careers Expo, which will be held on Thursday, 24 July, early in Term 3. This is a valuable opportunity to explore the breadth of offerings and career pathways available at the College. 2026 Course Guides will be available in the coming weeks.

    Using Data to Inform Pathways
As part of our commitment to supporting each student’s success, the College will be reviewing Semester 1 academic data to guide conversations around pathway decisions. These insights will be used to help students and families identify the most appropriate and supportive course options for 2026 and beyond.

Additionally, our Academic Review Committee continues to meet with families to help students get back on track, set goals, and access the support needed to achieve improved outcomes for the remainder of the year.

We thank our students and families for their ongoing commitment to learning and growth. Let’s continue to work together to ensure our young men are well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

    Student Wellbeing

At Marcellin, we are committed to fostering healthy relationships and promoting the overall well-being of our students. As part of our Respectful Relationships and Wellbeing programs, we are addressing the growing concern of gambling among young males in Australia. With the rise of online platforms and sports betting, it's crucial to equip our students with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions.

Experts like Dr Judith Locke and Dr Lea Waters provide valuable insights into supporting young individuals in navigating these challenges. Dr Locke emphasises the importance of fostering independence and resilience in children, which can be protective factors against risky behaviours like gambling. In her best-selling book, The Bonsai Child, Dr Locke reinforces the importance of structure and clear high expectations. She also highlights the importance of parents regularly monitoring their children’s activities online and when on devices.

Dr Waters advocates for strength-based parenting, focusing on a child's inherent strengths to build resilience and confidence. This approach encourages children to develop a positive self-identity and the confidence to resist negative influences, such as the temptation to gamble. Discussions around avoiding harmful behaviours like gambling provide great opportunities for parents and carers to consciously focus on their child's strengths, fostering a positive environment that encourages growth and resilience.

The Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation provides resources to assist parents in navigating conversations about gambling. Their "Be Ahead of the Game" program offers tools and strategies to help parents engage with their teenagers about the risks associated with gambling. By initiating open and honest discussions, parents can help their children understand the potential harms of gambling and make informed decisions.

    Tips for Parents
To support your child in making informed choices about gambling, consider the following strategies:

    1. Initiate Open Conversations: Discuss the risks associated with gambling in a non-judgmental manner. Use real-life examples to illustrate potential consequences. A great time to do this is when advertisements are seen or heard together.
    2. Set Clear Expectations: Establish family rules regarding gambling and ensure your child understands the reasons behind them.
    3. Monitor Online Activities: Be aware of your child's online interactions and the platforms they use. Discuss the risks of online gambling and gaming-related betting.
    4. Encourage Healthy Alternatives: Promote activities that build resilience and self-esteem, such as sports, arts, or volunteering.
    5. Model Responsible Behaviour: Demonstrate healthy decision-making and coping strategies in your own life. Children often emulate the behaviours they observe in adults.
    6. Recognise Warning Signs: Be vigilant for signs of gambling-related problems, such as secretive behaviour, declining academic performance, or financial issues. Early intervention can prevent more serious problems later on.

Faith In Action – Kenny House
Every child deserves to feel warm and comfortable. Unfortunately, many children in our community are living without the most basic necessities - warm clothing and bedding. This is where you come in! Big Group Hug has put out a call for support as they are in desperate need of winter jackets and coats to support young people in need.

We’re asking the community to donate new and pre-loved winter clothing and bed linen for children aged 1-16 (sizes 4-16 most needed) for distribution to the families we support in the cold winter months, and year-round.

Donations can be dropped off at main reception (Marist House) or via your son’s Pastoral Group.

Italian Brainrot - What Parents Really Need to Know NOW!
Italian Brainrot - The viral nonsense your child is quoting at dinner? It didn’t come out of nowhere and it’s not harmless.

If you’ve recently heard your child chanting things like “Ballerina Cappuccina” or “Tralalero Tralala” in a cartoonish Italian accent and wondered what on earth is going on, you’re not imagining things. You’re witnessing the latest digital fever dream: Italian Brainrot, a chaotic fusion of AI-generated imagery, surreal humour and problematic content, swallowed whole by TikTok and spat straight into playgrounds, classrooms and group chats. And despite how random it might seem on the surface, this is not just silliness.

One of the most dangerous elements of this trend is how it hides behind absurdity. Creators and sharers shrug it off with, “It’s just a meme” or “It’s satire”, but irony is a well-used shield for hate. Known as the “irony shield”, this tactic allows offensive views to spread while dodging responsibility. Say something outrageous, laugh it off, then shame anyone who takes it seriously.

    Staff Profile

Hello, my name is Suzanne Hutton. I have been a member of the Marcellin College community since the beginning of this year where I am teaching Art and Architecture. What I enjoy most about the College is collaborating with my colleagues in the Art department and meeting new people in the Marcellin College community.

Outside of work I enjoy painting, printmaking and ceramics, anything creative! I have a love of nature and like to get outdoors for walks along the river or anywhere near the water. I love to spend time with my two sons, my family and friends. When I have a chance to travel I really enjoy experiencing other countries and cultures, as well as exploring different parts of Australia.

I've also enjoyed being a part of this year's senior musical, The Addams Family, where I have working with the team on props and costumes.

    Student Profile

Hi, I'm Aiden, a Year 10 student studying Chemistry, Physics, Pre Methods, Digital Technologies and Dollars and Sense. I aspire to become an aeronautical engineer and am actively involved in co-curricular activities like Gamechangers, Chess Club, choir, and the Green Team.

Last year, I participated in the Duke of Edinburgh program, which challenges young people through activities such as learning a new instrument, committing to a sport or hiking. All of these various activities are designed to challenge you mentally and physically. I highly recommend doing this as I found that it expanded my horizons beyond normal school activities and it helped develop life skills, build confidence and encourages you to take a step out of your comfort zone.

I also took part in the Vinnies Winter Sleepout, a significant fundraising event where participants sleep outdoors to raise money for the St Vincent de Paul Society, supporting those affected by domestic violence, homelessness, and social injustice. The night includes games and snacks, making it both enjoyable and impactful.

Additionally, I have the privilege of being one of 17 students selected for a NASA tour in December. As someone passionate about space and aviation, I'm excited to learn more about space exploration and engineering, and to see firsthand how NASA is advancing our understanding of the universe.

    Marcellin College - 75th Anniversary

    A look back to 2006:
A new chapter in the Performing Arts history of Marcellin College began in 2006 with the launch of The Man of La Mancha — the inaugural musical of the newly formed M2 Theatre Company. Created in partnership with Our Lady of Mercy College, M2 Theatre united the strong dramatic and musical talents of both Marcellin College and Our Lady of Mercy College, to create a new legacy of senior musical productions.

The show followed the story of imprisoned author Miguel Cervantes, who stages the tale of Don Quixote to defend his belongings before a mock trial. With a full cast, crew and orchestra, and support from staff, parents, alumni, and friends, the production set a high standard for years to come.

That same spirit continues today. Our next M2 senior production, The Addams Family, premieres next Friday. You can find ticket details for this production here.

    Mother’s Day Breakfasts
Our annual Mother’s Day Breakfasts were held on Thursday and Friday, 8 and 9 May and were once again a resounding success. These much-loved events brought together mothers, carers and special women in our students’ lives for a warm and meaningful celebration.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Parents & Friends Group for their ongoing support and outstanding organisation of these events year-after-year. A special highlight, as always, was the touching video messages from our students, expressing their love and appreciation – a truly memorable moment for all in attendance.

Year 7 2026 Family Trivia Night
On Wednesday, 14 May, we hosted the Year 7 2026 Family Trivia Night – a wonderful opportunity to welcome our newest students and their families to the Marcellin College community as they begin their transition into secondary school. The evening was filled with friendly competition, plenty of laughter and a great sense of camaraderie among future classmates and parents.

We look forward to continuing the transition journey and seeing our incoming Year 7 students at their Allwell Testing on Saturday, 23 August.

    Year 7 2027 Enrolments

Evan’s Outstanding Performance at the 2025 Pizzey Cup and Australia Cup
Our current 1st Tennis Captain, Evan recently represented Victoria with distinction in two prestigious national tennis events: the Australia Cup and the Pizzey Cup. His performance across both tournaments was nothing short of outstanding, culminating in individual success and significant team achievement.

In the team event, the Pizzey Cup, Evan played in the number one position for Victoria. Each day, he faced off against the top players from other states in both singles and doubles. Despite competing against the strongest talent from across the country, Evan lost only one match—ironically, to the same NSW player he would later defeat in the Australia Cup. This was also Victoria’s sole loss of the tournament, and thanks in no small part to Evan’s consistency and leadership, the Victorian team finished second overall—a remarkable improvement, and the team’s best result in over a decade.
