    Principal's Report

Dear Members of the Marcellin College Community,

Over recent weeks, our College has been graced with moments that speak to the very heart of who we are - a community of faith, learning and connection.

One of the most significant was the blessing and opening of our new College spaces, including the light-filled Placidus Building and beautiful Champagnat Chapel. As I shared on that day, these are not just buildings; they are places where the sacred and the ordinary meet. Spaces where prayer and reflection can nourish the soul, where learning can stretch the mind and where community can gather in ways that honour our Marist story while meeting the needs of our contemporary learners. Already, these places are breathing new life into our daily rhythm, inviting us to pause, to reflect, and to encounter God in the quiet and in the bustle.

Another highlight was our Past and Present Mums Luncheon - a day full of warmth, laughter and shared memories. To see mothers from across generations reconnect, tell stories and celebrate the bonds that endure across time was a reminder of the deep sense of belonging that shapes Marcellin. It was an expression of that special Marist gift – making people feel at home.

Our building program continues with strong progress on the Gallery Flyover, which is now taking great shape. I look forward to sharing more with you as we move towards its completion.

On the sporting front, our winter season concluded with outstanding results. Our Cross Country team secured their 25th consecutive championship – an extraordinary achievement that speaks of discipline, dedication and the quiet, consistent pursuit of excellence. I extend my heartfelt thanks to Mr John Meagher for his exceptional leadership of this program. Our First XI Soccer team also claimed the premiership this year, a victory earned through skill, perseverance and teamwork. Both achievements remind us of the power of commitment, humility and resilience.

This week, we also celebrated the Feast of the Assumption – a reminder that Mary’s journey is our journey. Her “yes” to God was not without challenge, yet it was wholehearted. In Mary we see the model of trust, courage and grace – virtues we are called to live in our own daily lives. As a Marist community, we look to her not only as our mother and guide but as one who points us always to her Son.

Towards the end of the term, I will be taking some personal leave to travel with my family. I am grateful for the gift of this time together and for the unwavering support of our Leadership Team in ensuring the College continues to flourish during my absence.

In all of this, I remain deeply grateful for the generosity, spirit and faith that make Marcellin College such a vibrant and hope-filled place.

    God Bless,

    Marco Di Cesare
    Principal

    Feast of the Assumption
    Mary, our Good Mother,
on this Feast of your Assumption
we thank you for walking with us
as a gentle presence and a guiding light.
You said “yes” to God with courage and love.
Help us to trust as you did, to see the needs of others,
and to respond with humility, compassion, and hope.
Draw us closer to your Son, Jesus,
so that we may live with hearts like yours –
welcoming, faithful, and full of grace.
    Mary, assumed into heaven,
pray for us and for our Marcellin College family,
that we may one day share in the joy of God’s eternal kingdom.
    Amen.

Blessing of the Champagnat Chapel, Chirat Learning Centre and Placidus Library

On Wednesday, 13 August, our College community gathered with Bishop Thinh Nguyen, priests, students, staff and invited guests to celebrate the blessing and opening of the newly renovated Champagnat Chapel, along with the Placidus Library and Chirat Learning Centre spaces. This milestone coincides beautifully with our 75th anniversary year, marking a new chapter in our mission to form the hearts and minds of young people in the Marist tradition.

The Champagnat Chapel stands at the heart of the College as more than a building – it is a sacred space for prayer, contemplation and encounter with God. The design invites us to reflect deeply: the altar and ambo, crafted from local bluestone, anchor us in our land while pointing us to the divine mysteries of Word and Eucharist; the flowing water in the forecourt recalls the “water from the rock” at the Hermitage in France, symbolising God’s grace sustaining our mission; the cosmic glass windows above the sanctuary lift our eyes to the wonder of creation; and the images of Mary and the Holy Spirit, both turned toward the altar, remind us of the mystery of the Incarnation and the call to say “yes” to God.

A special feature of the Chapel is our Marist HEART – Humility, Excellence, Acceptance, Resilience and Trust – housing the names of every student and staff member, in the spirit of St Marcellin, who entrusted his community to the care of Mary. Artist Anthony Russo’s work throughout the precinct weaves together image, material, light and texture to tell the story of salvation history and the Marist mission – proclaiming Christ’s presence in our midst and inspiring generations to come.

Feast of the Assumption – Mary in our Marist Spirituality
The celebration of our Chapel opening also takes place close to the Feast of the Assumption, a day of special significance for the Church and for all Marists. The Assumption of Mary into heaven reminds us of God’s promise to raise all people to share in the life of Christ. For St Marcellin Champagnat and the early Brothers, Mary was their “Good Mother,” a constant source of guidance and strength.

In our Marist spirituality, Mary is not distant or untouchable – she is a model of discipleship, walking alongside us in the everyday moments of life. She teaches us to be attentive to the needs of others, to trust in God’s promises and to live with compassion and humility. Today, as “Pilgrims of Hope,” we look to Mary to help us “look beyond” ourselves and respond generously to the call to make Jesus Christ known and loved.

May our renewed sacred spaces and our devotion to Mary continue to inspire us to live with a Marist HEART – bringing faith, hope and love to our College and to the wider world.

    Man Cave Workshop
Last week, on Thursday, we had the team from Mancave come in for their second workshop this year. We mainly focused on the 3 Hs, Hero, Hardship and Highlight, sharing personal idols, tough times in our lives and significant events, all whilst feeling welcomed and supported by our workshop leaders, Rhys and James.

What I found most beneficial was the LEAD tool – where you first Listen, then Empathise, Ask questions and Do what you can. Oftentimes, I find it hard to know what to do when someone asks for support, and the way they broke it down really shifted my perspective and will be beneficial for me in the future.

    From our Learning Areas

This past fortnight, the College has been bustling with activity, from Vocational Major students interviewing and creating their own podcast with Live FM radio to hosting exchange students from China and exploring the fascinating world of science during Science Week.

We are always exploring ways to enhance our students' learning, so that they can strive for the highest.

2025 Science Week activities have included a forensic who dunnit? and an explosive experiment!

On Tuesday, 12 August, we welcomed five boys from Shanghai Industrial and Commerce Foreign Languages school. They were met with five boys from Marcellin from Years 10 to 11, who will be their buddies until they leave on 22 August. So far, the boys have had an action-packed week, from embarrassing our students in Mr Abdallah’s Year 11 specialist maths class to attending the opening mass of the newly renovated chapel, playing basketball with their buddies, and attending an exciting incursion at Marcellin with Oakleigh Grammar School.

    2025 Chinese Exchange

During the incursion, students took part in an intense competition that tested their Chinese skills, which was followed by a traditional Chinese shadow puppet show, after which the boys had a go at manning the puppets themselves. Controlling them was a lot harder than expected and both students and teachers had their fair share of laughter at their terrible puppeteering. The whole puppet show was amazing and was a great way to end a day already brimming with excitement. The whole incursion was incredibly fun and a huge thanks to the students at Oakleigh for coming and participating so well. We made a lot of friends, and the students were super friendly. Thank you also to the passionate puppeteers who put on the show for us; their humour and harsh commentary on our attempts to control the puppets made the show more engaging.

We have so much planned for our Chinese students in the coming days and we hope to leave them with a great impression of Melbourne.

    Student Profile

Hi, my name is Christopher and I’m in Year 7. So far, my year has been full of great things. I'm the SRC for Redden House. I've planned two assemblies and am receiving great marks within SOAR. I also play four instruments, but only learn piano and bass at Marcellin, as well as take part in the Stage Band.

My goals for Year 8 and beyond are to continue to keep up with high effort in all subjects and co-curricular activities while still having fun doing so. What I love most about Marcellin College is the many opportunities provided and the great people within the community who help and support everyone whenever they can. When I’m not studying, I enjoy playing video games, soccer, meeting up and socialising with friends and sometimes cooking! In the future, I hope to become a successful entrepreneur so that I can put my creative and business attributes to work.

Overall, my transition into Marcellin was very easy-going, and so far and I have loved it. As I continue through Terms 3 and 4 of 2025, I hope for only good things to come (as well as a little less homework) .... and I am looking forward to my journey at Marcelin College.

Christopher, Year 7 Redden House SRC.

Year 12 VTAC sign-up and SEAS / Scholarships application
On Monday, all Year 12 students signed up to VTAC. VTAC is the tertiary admissions centre for Victoria. All university and most TAFE applications are administered by VTAC. In their VTAC application, students can apply for eight different courses. Course preferences can still be amended until late December.

As a follow-up, on Thursday, 21 August, the Careers and Further Education team will be going through the Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) and Scholarship portal on VTAC. SEAS allows for any disadvantage students have experienced throughout their VCE to be recognised and accounted for when assessing their eligibility for further study.

Students must pay the $80 application fee for VTAC before they can apply for SEAS and Scholarships. We recommend all students applying for further study make a SEAS application if eligible.

    Honouring Excellence in Marcellin Sport
This past fortnight has been a remarkable celebration of achievement, dedication and sportsmanship as our Cross Country, 1st XVIII Football, and 1st XI Soccer teams gathered for their end-of-season presentation nights. These events, held for teams competing in AGSV and VRSU Premiership sports, are a fitting tribute to the commitment and passion shown by our students over many years.

For some of the boys and their families, these nights represent the culmination of six years of hard work, growth and unwavering dedication to the Marcellin College Sport Program. The highlight of each evening is the presentation of the Best and Fairest awards—an honour reserved for those who exemplify not only athletic excellence but also humility, leadership and team spirit.

The talent within our sport program continues to inspire and the grace with which our young men accept their awards is truly moving. Their heartfelt gratitude to families, teammates, coaches and the College reflects the values we hold dear at Marcellin. These young men are not only exceptional athletes—they are outstanding role models.

Congratulations to our 2025 Award Winners:

    • Aaron Piaia – Best and Fairest, 1st XI Soccer
    • Nicholas Canavan – Best and Fairest, 1st XVIII Football
    • Oliver Peake– Best Overall Athlete, Cross Country

We extend our deepest congratulations to these exceptional athletes. Their contributions have enriched our sporting community and inspired those around them.

We look forward to celebrating the achievements of our 1st XV Rugby team at their presentation night later in the term.
