Principal's Report

Dear Members of the Marcellin College Community,
Welcome back for the start of Term 4 and thank you for your warm welcome! After six weeks of long service leave, it has been a joy to return to our vibrant community. I hope to share with you some of the many highlights from this past week, as together we continue to build our story at Marcellin College.
A Personal Note of Gratitude
My time away was restorative. I was fortunate to travel with family - two weeks in Ireland, two weeks in Spain and a week in Singapore to enjoy the F1 Grand Prix. Travelling with extended family always brings its own adventures, laughter and memorable moments. As much as I enjoyed the break, I must say it felt right to come home - to our College, our improvements and the shared energy of the Marcellin community.
We have much to celebrate over the past fortnight and here are just a few highlights.
Marist Schools Australia Regional Mass & Dinner
On Saturday, 11 October we gathered for our annual Marist Schools Australia (MSA) Mass and Dinner, an occasion that allowed us to honour one of our own. Mr John Di Natale received a Marist Award for Service, in recognition of his deep commitment, leadership and years of service to our College.
John is renowned within our community for his passion, energy and unmistakable flair for culture and connection. As Learning Leader for Languages, his love of Italian and his gift for hospitality have transformed College life - from the joy of our Globalisation Staff Lunch to the fun and laughter of our Eurovision competition. His leadership of Italian educational immersion tours, care for students and presence across the College truly embody the Marist spirit of family and joy.
John’s ability to bring people together, often with humour, warmth and a little theatricality, has made a lasting impact on our community. We congratulate Mr John Di Natale on this richly deserved recognition for his outstanding service and contribution to Marcellin College.

75th Anniversary Music Gala Concert
On Sunday, 12 October we celebrated 75 years of music at Marcellin College in a spectacular concert held at The Centre Ivanhoe. From the opening performance featuring students from the 1950s through to the present decade, the evening was a moving testament to our history and our evolving identity.
It was particularly inspiring to see so many old collegians return to the stage, bridging generations of musical life at Marcellin. In my address, I offered thanks to the many who made the night possible — our Music Department, staff, students, alumni, families and all who have supported our music program over the years. We truly celebrated not only who we were, but who we are becoming together. Ms Natalie Carger oversaw the events – congratulations and thank you, Natalie. We couldn’t have asked for more!

Year 7 2026 Parent Transition Night
On Tuesday evening, we warmly welcomed our Year 7 2026 families to learn more about life at the College as we commence our transition program. The energy, curiosity and enthusiasm in the space was palpable. It is always inspiring to see future members of our community begin to connect with our mission. A sincere thanks to Mr Ryan Edwards and Mr Adrian Tomada for their leadership and oversight of the evening and preparing our newest families for the year ahead.
Year 12 Farewells & Celebrations
This Wednesday marked the final formal day for our Year 12 cohort. The students conducted themselves with dignity and exemplified the leadership they have shown throughout the year. With the traditional signing of shirts and reflecting on years past, it was a poignant moment for students, staff and families alike.

That momentum carried into Thursday, when our Year 12 parents joined us for a celebratory breakfast. I extend heartfelt gratitude to all Year 12 parents for their support over the past six years. As we now turn our thoughts to the upcoming Graduation Mass and Valedictory Dinner, we remain united in celebrating these fine young men.

Create25 – Art, Design & Technology Exhibition
On Wednesday evening, we held our annual Art & Design Technology Exhibition, Create25. Once again, I was left in awe of the creativity, innovation and skill on display. Our Visual Arts and Design Technology programs occupy a critical place in our College, because in a fast-changing world these creative capacities - design thinking, visual literacy, hands-on skills and innovation - are more important than ever. They complement our academic and spiritual learning by forming well-rounded young men who can adapt, imagine and contribute meaningfully in our society. My thanks to Ms Marina Sipos and Ms Annie McNamara for their leadership of these areas and for a wonderful night of celebrations.

A Word of Thanks
Over the past six weeks, I have had the privilege of handing the reins of leading the College to Ms Suzanne Farley, who served as Acting Principal. Suzanne’s calm, steady leadership and insightfulness were a source of strength for our community, and I thank her sincerely for her service and partnership.
As we move forward into this last term together, I look forward to continuing our journey of faith, learning and belonging. Thank you to every parent, student and staff member for your ongoing support and partnership in this great adventure.
God Bless,
Marco Di Cesare
Principal

Prayer for Year 12 Students
Loving God,
Just as St Marcellin Champagnat trusted in Your care and walked with courage, may these students finish their school journey with confidence and hope.
Help them to face their exams with calm hearts and clear minds,
knowing that their efforts are a gift and Your grace is always near.
Give them strength to persevere, humility to learn,
and the courage to follow the path You have set for them.
May they carry Marcellin’s spirit of kindness and faith into all they do.
Amen.

The Power of Creativity in a Data-Driven World
Our recent Create25, Art & Design Technology Exhibition offered a stunning celebration of student talent, imagination and innovation. Walking through the exhibition, it was impossible not to be inspired by the diversity of ideas and the depth of thought behind each piece. From meticulously crafted artworks to intricate design and technology projects, each display represented more than just a finished product; it reflected a process of inquiry, experimentation and persistence.
Throughout the evening, the work of our music students added a wonderful dimension to the event, creating a vibrant atmosphere that reflected the creative energy of the exhibition as a whole. Their performances reminded us that creativity takes many forms - visual, musical, digital and practical - each offering students a powerful way to communicate ideas and emotions.
In schools, much of our focus necessarily centres on achievement, progress and assessment. These are important measures of learning and help us ensure that students are challenged and supported to reach their full potential. But events like Create25 remind us that learning is also about curiosity, risk-taking and self-expression, qualities that are just as essential for success, both at school and beyond.
Creativity isn’t confined to the arts. It’s visible in a student who finds an elegant solution to a complex mathematical problem, who designs a more efficient prototype in a technology class, or who interprets a text from a fresh perspective in English. Creative thinking is, at its core, about seeing possibilities, asking “what if?”, and being willing to take intellectual risks. These are the same qualities that drive innovation in science, business and community life.
As our students continue to navigate their learning pathways in the years ahead, I hope that they recognise the richness and value of subjects such as the Arts, Theatre Studies, Technology and Music. These learning areas nurture imagination and self-expression while also developing transferable skills including problem-solving, collaboration, empathy and adaptability. Such skills are increasingly sought after in every profession and career pathway. They remind us that creativity is not just something to be celebrated once a year at an exhibition, but a mindset that shapes how we approach challenges and opportunities in every field.
As educators, our challenge and privilege is to cultivate both rigour and creativity. The two are not opposites but partners in learning. Rigour gives structure and depth to imagination, while creativity gives meaning and energy to academic pursuit. When students are encouraged to explore ideas deeply and express them authentically, they develop confidence not only in what they know, but in how they think.
Create25 offered a powerful reminder that our students are not just learners preparing for exams, but emerging thinkers, makers and creators. My sincere thanks to all the staff and students who contributed to the success of the exhibition. It was a wonderful celebration of learning in its many forms and a reminder that imagination and excellence truly thrive together.

Wellbeing
Marcellin College and Our Lady of Mercy College (OLMC) once again joined forces for a parent night featuring Michael Carr-Gregg as the guest speaker. The topic was Teenagers - coping with life, love and loss.
Michael’s insightful talk provided helpful hints for navigating adolescence, which has now been extended to ages 10 to 24. He stressed the importance of allowing teens to experience disappointment while a trusted adult in their lives helps coach them through coping strategies. He commented that social media has both positives and negatives, but to be alert for the increasing trend of young people using “Replika” to create seemingly genuine and attractive relationships. Though, as these are AI, the young person risks developing a skewed view of how a human relationship might be. Michael discussed the various methods by which teens grieve and covered the causes of grieving, which extend far beyond human death in the family.
It was great to see so many parents and hear such a deep and thoughtful presentation.

Man Cave
Last week, our Year 11 boys took part in the Man Cave workshop — a powerful and engaging day focused on mental health, emotional awareness, and modern masculinity. The facilitators led an excellent mix of open discussion and light-hearted competitive games, creating a space where many boys felt comfortable to connect, reflect and have some fun along the way. I personally was so impressed by the level of respect, maturity and empathy our boys showed for one another. They listened deeply, spoke honestly, and supported their peers with genuine care. The workshop reinforced that real strength comes from vulnerability — and that being a good mate, looking out for each other and showing kindness are at the heart of positive masculinity.

Marcellin College 75th Anniversary Music Gala – A Celebration Through the Decades
The Marcellin College 75th Anniversary Music Gala was a spectacular journey through time, where music, memories and community came together in harmony. Held at The Centre, Ivanhoe, the event drew nearly 300 guests who were swept up in a dazzling showcase of performances spanning seven decades of Marcellin music.
From the original Marcellin song of the 1950s to the high energy of 1970s jazz and funk to 2000s pop, each decade came alive with colour, sound and spirit. Clever video montages transported the audience back in time, setting the scene for every era before musicians took the stage to capture its distinctive style and energy.
Over 100 performers, including current students, Old Collegians, staff and guest professionals, joined forces to celebrate the College’s remarkable musical legacy. Alumni stars Andrew Broadbent and Lucas Dejong delivered outstanding performances, while Sean Millis from The Voice lit up the stage. When the Blues Brothers Tribute Band arrived with their iconic police cruiser gleaming in the portico, the audience knew they were in for an unforgettable finale.
The atmosphere in the hall was electric, with Old Collegians and families reminiscing about the past and celebrating the vibrant future of Marcellin music. Heartfelt thanks to our performers, staff, families and alumni who made the night such a success, and special thanks to Natalie Carger for her creative vision and dedication in bringing this event to life. Here’s to the next 25 years and an even greater celebration at the centenary!

Student Profile

Hi, my name is Adam and I’m in Year 8. My goal for Year 9 and beyond is to continue to strive for the highest to achieve what I think is possible. What I love most about Marcellin College is spending time with friends and also engaging in some of my favourite subjects like wood tech and physical education. When I’m not studying, I enjoy playing outside as well as chatting to friends. While I am unsure about my future career, I’m currently interested in sports and different careers around it.
This year, I have been included in the SOAR Program at Marcellin, which is challenging yet fun as it gives me the opportunity to continue my best work. I have been enjoying my first experience in wood tech as we have been designing and making C02 drag race cars. Next year, I look forward to engaging in my new subjects.
